What is YaketyYak?

YaketyYak is made up of parents and professionals to help other parents and families with children who use communication aids in the Northamptonshire region.

Our aim is to:

  • Provide an opportunity for parents to meet and discuss the issues they are dealing with surrounding the use of communication aids
  • Provide an opportunity for children and young people to meet others in a similar situation

2011 The National Year for Communication

Hello National Year of Communication

Hello, the 2011 national year of communication, is a campaign to increase understanding of how important it is for children and young people to develop good communication skills.

This June has seen the launch of Other Ways of Speaking a new information booklet for parents and professionals that provides information on the different ways children and young people with little or no speech communicate, how to support them and where to go for further information and help. Free copies can be downloaded at Hello. Other Ways of Speaking has been produced by the Communication Trust and Communication Matters.

You Matter Training

You Matter is a free 2 day course to support and empower parents and education support staff of children who are using Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) or as we have termed it, "Aided Communication".

During the course, you will learn:-

  • How aided communication develops
  • To select appropriate vocabulary for your child
  • To use effective strategies to support your child’s aided communication
  • How to involve others
  • Setting and measuring your own communication goals with your child

It will take place at the Camrose Children's Centre, Tenby Road, Northampton NN5 7DF on the 11/11/11 and the 25/11/11.

There is also a 1/2 day communication aid training course available on 2/12/11.
